Deluge valve is a type of automatic control valve in water or foam fire extinguishing system, operating according to the diaphragm mechanism - "Diaphragm Style" or mechanical latch - "Mechanical Latching" (now rarely used). In normal state, water is retained in the valve and controlled by the discharge system (trim).
1. Concept of deluge valve
Valves are often used in fixed fire protection systems with dry pipe systems, when the valve opens, water flows into the pipe and out through open sprinklers (deluge system) or closed sprinklers (preaction system) that have been activated.
The deluge valve has the advantage of opening quickly, providing the ability to distribute a large amount of water in a short period of time, so it is applied to protect fire protection for high-risk areas such as: transformer rooms, warehouses, airport warehouses, chemical plants, production lines, etc.
2. Structure of the deluge valve
The diaphragm-type deluge valve is composed of 3 basic components:
Valve body
Diaphragm
Valve cover
Structure of Deluge Valve
So what is the working principle of deluge valve?
The deluge valve operates based on the pressure in the diaphragm chamber (Figure 3) to keep the diaphragm against the pressure from the water inlet. In normal condition, the pressure in the diaphragm chamber is created by the amount of water entering the chamber through the pipeline connected to the main control valve of the system.
When the water pipe into the diaphragm chamber is opened by the fire detection system (sprinkler, detector, emergency button ...), the water is discharged from the diaphragm chamber faster than its self-filling process through the trim. This causes the pressure in the diaphragm chamber to drop rapidly, leading to a decrease in the pressure on the diaphragm. Under the pressure from the water inlet, the diaphragm contracts, allowing water to enter the piping system.
